Thousand Oaks, Berkeley

Thousand Oaks is the neighborhood where we live! Carol & I looked at about 100 homes when we were buying our home. We finally linked up with a local Realtor who showed us 4 homes. We made 2 offers, bought 1, and have lived in the same house for over twenty years!

We love the neighborhood... the architecture, history, neighbors, the shopping, and selling homes and real estate in Thousand Oaks!

It's a "feet first" neighborhood. Many of the homeowners (including us) have lived here for decades, and the only way they plan to leave is "feet first"

But the neighborhood isn't all alte kakke's... we have lots of families with kids. There's a wonderful playground next to the Thousand Oaks School... with a stream next to it. Several years ago the stream was "daylighted" and it's a very pleasant park now.

And our Thousand Oaks Magnet School is simply wonderful, with a dedicated staff and active PTA. Carol & I just took a tour of the school this morning.... and I took some photos. We were very impressed with everyone we met... and wished we could attend Elementary School again.

Our neighborhood association is TONA - Thousand Oaks Neighborhood Association . TONA helps neighbors with local issues such as traffic, noise, schools, etc.

Shopping is great! I'm from The Bronx, and like to walk to shops. Within a short stroll on Solano Avenue are all the essentials of life - Coffee (Peet's & Starbucks), Movies (The Oaks Theater), Bookstores (Pegasus and Half Price Books), Banks (Mechanic's, Wells Fargo, Washington Mutual), Restaurants (Sweet Basil, Khana Peena, Boran), Supermarkets (Andronico's, Safeway), a Post Office, and even Noah's Bagels!

Our shopping street is Solano Avenue, which goes down the hill into Albany. On the first Sunday after Labor Day, the Solano Avenue Associations hosts the Solano Stroll... a mile long block party which attracts exhibits, music, performers, food vendors, and about 100,000 people! I always see lots of friends, kids, and happy dogs. Come - you'll have a great time (but be sure to bring the sun block!)
Trish Hawthorne gives a wonderful seminar on the history and architecture of the neighborhood.
There aren't any tract homes here! The adjoining Northbrae tract was developed by local developers. Look down and chances are you'll see pink or light red sidewalk concrete - a signature of the Northbrae Tract.

Many of the streets after California counties because there was a movement to make Berkeley the capital of California at the turn of the last century. Hence, we have streets named Solano, Colusa, The Alameda, Modoc, Tulare, Los Angeles, Napa, Yolo...

The Solano Tunnel was originally a light rail tunnel for commuter trains to San Francisco. They cut open the hill, put in the concrete arch, and backfilled the arch with soil. The traffic circle at the intersection of Marin, The Arlington, Mendocino & Del Norte is just above the tunnel, and the fountain has been beautifully restored.

The commuter trains ran up and down Solano, and another route went down Colusa and Monterey to the Westbrae shopping area.

Peets Coffee & Tea 1825 Solano Avenue
Berkeley CA

510-526-9607
The bay area’s best deal, ranking up there with attending a West Coast Live performance at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, is to get a Peet’s “credit’ card. Whenever you add $20 to the card, they give you $1 off (they once gave you the drink of your choice). I usually make my $20 deposit into BOP (Bank of Peets) whenever I have a hankering fo a double decaf mocha, nonfat milk (doesn’t that sound like a contradiction in terms?) Peet's even has coffee & tea tastings!

Zachary's Chicago Pizza 1853 Solano Avenue
Berkeley CA

510-525-5950
If there were a Pantheon dedicated to Pizza, Cheese Board would be Zeus

Arinell would win the award for “most like NY style”, Lococos and Cugini would be lesser gods... and Zachary’s would be mere mortals.

Zachary’s keeps on getting awards, but I think that’s only because the Cheese Board is only open limited hours druing the daytime
