A Comfortable Berkeley Bungalow on a Wonderful Tree Lined Street

August 12, 2017 by iserkes Leave a Comment

1525 Parker Street, Berkeley

Open Sunday 27 Aug 2017 2:00 to 4:30 pm

Classic California bungalow has 3 bedrooms; 2 baths; eat-in kitchen (with large moveable island); spacious living/dining area; elegant window detail; deck & secluded landscaped back garden. Workshop & garden studio at rear is a terrific extra for storage, art, wood-working, office, or childrens’ playspace!

An abundance of natural light from all sides, & kitchen skylight illuminates well-connected spaces; convenient pass-through from kitchen to dining area; wood floors; garden citrus & plums!  Located close to three BART stations; parks & schools within nearby and biking distance. Recent cosmetic upgrades and it’s gorgeous!

And from Doug & Rachael to you!

1525 Parker St – What we’ve loved about the house

Why we’re moving:

We’re heading for the East Coast!  After nine happy years in Berkeley, we’re pulling up roots and moving to Western Massachusetts to be closer to family, the four seasons (snow and all), and the ways of rural life.  It’s hard to leave the East Bay and our neighborhood in particular, but the timing is just right for our professional work and for our kids’ ages and schooling.

There are a number of things that we’ve really loved about our house:

We were first struck by the amount of light in the house from the windows on every side and from the kitchen skylight.  We’ve always really liked the open layout, too.  It’s been so nice for our family to have a space that feels well connected (the pass-through helps a lot), and it’s also been great to be able to close doors to the sleeping areas for kids’ nap times and at night.  The big kitchen has been so nice: easy for entertaining, and lots of counter space for cooking.

We’ve really enjoyed the front and back yards, and it’s delightful to have our fruit trees producing citrus and plums (sad to leave them!).  Our garden boxes have done really well in the south-facing front yard.  Plus, we’re glad to have the east-side bike parking in the alley (and with the gate in place).

The studio and shed out back have been awesome.  The studio is a lovely getaway on the property for playing music or napping, and we’ve also used it for a quiet workspace (especially with the stand-up work station).  The storage area in the studio allows for organization of hobby materials and bulky stuff that doesn’t fit in the house.  The shed we’ve used as a woodshop for building furniture and house improvements and have been so thankful for it.

The neighborhood and street have been wonderful.  We’ve enjoyed sitting on our front porch and seeing all our neighbors who are kind and interesting.  It is a great mix of people.  There are tons of kid-friendly activities that are easily accessible: lots of parks and playgrounds nearby, the Lawrence Hall of Science, the Cal Academy of Sciences, the Bay Area Discovery Museum, etc.  Plus, we’re near three BART stations, so it’s easy to get around.  We also love how many parks and schools are within easy walking and biking distance.  Restaurants are in just about every direction, too.  It’s easy to get to San Francisco and to Oakland by bike, BART, car, and walking.  It’s also easy to get up into the Berkeley hills for hiking, and there are tons of events, performances, and farmers’ markets that we’ve loved going to.

It’s been fantastic being here!
